Endodontics

Endodontics refers to a focused treatment of the inside of the tooth, also called the pulp and root canals where the nerve and blood supply are located. On grown-up teeth, these are root canal procedures. On baby teeth, they can be pulpotomies or pulpectomies.

To Save Your Baby’s Tooth

Pulpomtomies and pulpectomies are procedures that help treat the nerve of the baby teeth. When adult teeth have problems with the nerve, tooth canal procedures are completed. We don’t treat baby teeth the same way. If a nerve is affected or infected on a baby tooth, Dr. Julie may recommend that the tooth be wiggled out. However, most of the time, we want to save baby teeth so they may hold the space in the mouth for the grown-up tooth to come in. If a baby tooth needs nerve treatment, pulpotomies or pulpectomies help remove the damaged or infected nerve and medicate the underlying tissue. This treatment is often followed by a baby tooth cap or crown. The teeth typically remain until they are naturally ready to fall out. The treatment can greatly help relieve discomfort and pain from your child’s mouth. Untreated cavities are the most common reason why a child would need a pulpectomy, although trauma and other injuries like a cracked or broken tooth can also require intervention. Pulpotomies and pulpectomies can be needed due to:

  • Chipped, broken or fractured teeth
  • Extensive tooth decay or cavities
  • Infected teeth
  • Painful teeth
  • Trauma to teeth

Not all injuries will require a tooth to be extracted, sometimes baby teeth and permanent teeth can be saved. Get in touch with us for a complete assessment of your child’s oral health.

Pain-Free & Anxiety-Free Dentistry

Whether it is because of a bad past experience or because it is the first time, lots of people find dental procedures scary! If required, sedation is used to make sure procedures are completed in a safe and painless way.
